Micro
Machines from American Precision Gear
| Perched at
the top of the Silicon Valley
in San Carlos, California, American Precision Gear Company
has been manufacturing custom precision gears for nearly forty
years, primarily for the aerospace industry. Recently they have
noticed that many of their biomedical clients are requesting gears
that are smaller and smaller. |
|
“With
our Suisse-Mikron gear hobbing machines, we are able
to give them gears as small as .05 of an inch,” said Dennis
Regan, the company's president. "These gears are so small,
that for a recent trade show, we slipped two gears on a moth's
front feelers, put a large magnifying glass above it and asked
people to have a look. They were amazed. |

The tiny gears are used
in various small OEM medical devices,
some of them directly in the body cavity, performing procedures
involving cutting and pumping. “These miniature gears are
quite a contrast to the 48" gears we make for heavy industrial
purposes. You certainly don't need a forklift in the fine pitch
room," remarked Regan, “just excellent eyesight.” |
